In Memoriam - Jamie Lyons - 60s Rocker

Jamie Lyons was a powerful presence on High Street, hub of the OSU Campus in the late 60s. He sang lead with the band "Hard Sauce", a favorite hard rockin' band that played at the old South 'Berg. He would put such strength and feeling in his rendition of Street Fightin' Man, a hormone-laden classic Rolling Stones hit of the era - that on more than one occasion, the place would literally empty out sending frenzied rockers and hippies out in the streets searching for mischief. This was a special time when student protests, coupled with anti-war sentiments and general mistrust by our generation of "anyone older than 30", was the rage. Music could move mountains -well… it certainly moved us!

Jamie brushed fame with his version of "Little Bit o" Soul" he recorded as lead singer of The Music Explosion in 1967. The song was a hit that rose to number 2 in the charts. It has since then remained forever enshrined in the traditional repertoire of countless "garage bands" that still include the tune as a favorite, even today.

Ro-z Mendelson, who was then a roadie for Hard Sauce, remembers -as quoted in an article in today's Columbus Dispatch- that: "He was one of the greatest singers. He could just belt out a song like nobody else," and ""Onstage, he was powerful and he’d win everybody over".

As large and dounting as his stage persona was, off-stage he was a warm, gentle, down-to-earth, likeable guy who, like most of us, liked to hang out with friends.

Although he never achieved the fame that was surely due to him, he kept on singing occasionally. For the past two years, he was a featured guest star appearing with the Mendelsonics at Comfest 06 and 05. An enthusiastic large crowd of old friends and new fans cheerd him on at the outdoor art festival last June, as he was performing with the band on the Gazebo stage. At one point he was overcome with a sudden episode that left him confused and dazed. Most folks didn't notice anything as they danced and swayed to the music, and he did recover and finish his set, but the event left him shaken. He had had a history of heart trouble and may have suffered an attack that evening. He returned to his home in South Carolina and seemed to be doing well for a few months but he suddenly collapsed last week, working in his garden where his daughter found him.

He was 57 years old. He was a friend and I will miss him.

‘UNREAL REALITIES: A Retrospective of W.C. Hemming Paintings from 1984 through 2006’

Acme Art Company is pleased to announce Columbus native, WC Hemming’s exhibition, ‘UNREAL REALITIES’.

The exhibition is a retrospective of his works dating from 1984 to 2006. The work will comprise a timeline of his motifs: landscapes, portraits, memories and moments in time. Hemming has previously had art shows at the BCN Art Gallery in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, Spain (2003), Costa Del Sol, Spain (2002, 2003), and these venues in Columbus: City Hall, Cultural Arts Center, Roy G. Biv and Lanning Gallery. He has also exhibited at Alana’s; Isabella’s Café Italia, numerous exhibits at the Short North Tavern and has done covers for the ‘Short North Gazette’. He has been a member of Acme Art Company since its inception in 1987.



Hemming, famed for his bar art depictions, is known for his paintings at Dick’s Den and other Central Ohio establishments. Educated at the Columbus College of Art and Design and The Ohio State University he has been painting since 1966.



Hemming’s paintings have the feel of outsider art, fully expressionistic, yet primitive - full of life with irony and humor depicted in rich colors. WC Hemming’s style is straightforward with most of the work in acrylic and canvas. His subject matter is influenced by musicians, famous historical / literary figures, topical events and humorous situations. He is a Boston Expressionist of the Jack Levine School and is inspired by Charles Bragg and Thomas Nast.



Hemming has produced hundreds of paintings ranging from moody landscapes to social commentary to unusual portraits and humorous parodies. Of his work, Hemming says, “I like to paint the human condition and my journey through life. I hope it can touch other people to search their memory for similar experiences. I value the human figure and try to add a little psychology in the emotions behind the paintings so that the expressions are an indication of my age and time and experiences.”


The Opening Reception is Friday, September 8th from 6 PM – 9 PM at Acme Art Company, 934 Cleveland Avenue – between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue. The reception is open and free to the public. The Ohio State University Faculty Club will present the prints and drawings of The Ohio State University’s Professor of Art, Charles Massey, Jr., in a solo exhibition beginning on August 30 and continuing through October 20, 2006. The exhibition is titled: “Making Secrets Visible – Everything Counts.” The club, at 181 South Oval Drive, will host an Opening Reception in honor of Professor Massey on Friday, September 29th from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Speaking of his creative process, Professor Massey reveals: “When I was a child, I liked it that Supermen could discover secrets with his x-ray vision. Since then, I have wished for the power of x-ray vision so that I could see beyond the obvious and know more about what is in front of me. I attempt, through my prints and drawings, to make visible the “secrets” I sense in the things I see. I am looking for something of substance, of consequence”


Charles Massey, Jr., has played an active role in the arts both on the campus of The Ohio State University and in the city of Columbus.

The Life of a Migrant Community

Presented in the Riffe Center lobby, Growing Season includes original photographs accompanied by text panels that give viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives of a tight-knit community and provide a new understanding of the migrant experience.

Gary Harwood and David Hassler combine photography and words to create a stunning portrait of a community rich in social capital and give voice in a new way to a group of people that are largely unseen and misunderstood.

“When I first received permission, in 2001, to photograph the migrant workers on a family farm in Hartville, Ohio, I anticipated that I would be documenting hardship,” said Harwood. “Migrant workers continually face difficult conditions while trying to support themselves and their families. Farm work is physical, hot and dirty. The days in the fields are long and exhausting, and there is no shortage of documented cases of terrible living and working conditions—what I found; however, was a very different story.”

Harwood photographed the Mexican American and Mexican migrant families over the course of several growing seasons. Though his work began with field photos, over time he focused more on family pictures, as he was invited to photograph baptisms, first communions, weddings, birthday parties, and private family events.

In 2004 writer David Hassler began collaborating with Harwood on this documentary project, which has become both an exhibition and a book.

This project was funded by an Ohio Arts Council 2006 Artists and Communities grant.

Gary Harwood is a 2006 OAC Individual Excellence Award recipient, and David Hassler is a 2000 OAC Individual Artist Fellowship Award recipient.

(Upper Arlington, OH) - The Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival celebrates 40 years as central Ohio's premier one-day blind-juried arts festival with festival founder Don Dodrill, on Labor Day Monday September 4, 2006. This free festival, hosted by the City of Upper Arlington's Cultural Arts Division, is held in Northam Park and runs from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Made possible through the efforts of City staff and more than 200 volunteers, the festival draws over 25,000 people every year from all over to celebrate and take part in the visual and performing arts. We invite you to enjoy 200 juried, fine art and fine craft artists from all over the nation and Canada exhibiting, selling and demonstrating their wares. Showcasing the works of 20 different mediums including painting, pottery, photography, jewelry, glassware, sculpture and more, the festival offers something for every art collector.

Over the course of 40 years the festival has grown from a small exhibition of local artists in Miller Park to attract artists from all over the country, with the addition of hands-on art activities for children and adults, performing arts, and tasty treats for all to enjoy. In 1966 artist Don Dodrill began the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival with other local artists. Don Dodrill has exhibited in the Upper Arlington Arts Festival every year since its inception, except for one year.

Don Dodrill reflects, "the festival means a lot to me. It has given me an opportunity to meet many artists from different locations, see old friends and neighbors, to sell paintings and accept commissions from visitors. I believe the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival is significantly important in making the arts an important part of community living. Patterned after the Labor Day Arts Festival, other communities have established their own art festivals," remarks Don Dodrill. This year Don Dodrill will exhibit his paintings in booth number 82.
