Landscape Exhibit at Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery

Landscape, January 9-25
The Concourse Gallery Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission, in partnership with the Sharon Weiss Gallery, is delighted to present the works of eight artists painting the landscape.

The genre of landscape painting came into its own in the 17th and 18th century through the painters of the Barbizon School in France and continues today through the contemporary artists of Landscape. Each artist of Landscape paints nature in a diverse range of styles and methods, including the plein aire tradition, a French phrase meaning “painting under the open sky”. The painters of Landscape are Rick Akers, Debra Dawson, Rachel Stern, Michael Hoza, Stacy Leeman, Edwin Shuttleworth III, Malcolm Baroway, and Betsy Arvidson. Uniquely reflecting the landscape of nature, the artist’s deep appreciation for the Ohio scenery and beyond is seen in every brushstroke and wash of color.

All painters of Landscape are represented by Sharon Weiss Gallery located in the Short North. Sharon Weiss owns the Sharon Weiss Gallery, formerly Antiques and Art on Poplar, which is located at 20 E. Lincoln Rd in the Short North. For 11 years, her gallery has exhibited 26 local artists who exhibit regularly, including one-person shows. Her collection includes a majority of Columbus area artist’s as well as surrounding area, ranges from Folk Art to Contemporary to Vintage Paintings.

Join us for Artspeak, a concourse conversation on art with artists whose work is featured in the exhibit Wednesday January 18 from 12-1 p.m. Get to know the artists and their creative process. Landscape will be on display from January 9-25. Don’t miss the opening reception January 9 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Special thanks to mary’s catering for their artful catering for the reception. Legendary Columbus "photographer of the stars"in the 80s and 90s, and now residing in New mexico, Gentelman/rancher DR Goff came to town to visit with old friends. Lynn and I held a little get-together in his honor and Mark Berger took these photos:

Gertrude Stein Gertrude Stein Gertrude Stein

by Marty Martin,
performed as a staged reading bt Katherine Burkman, Directed by Jane Cottrell Sunday, February 12, 2pm Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center 1125 College Avenue

In this imaginary monologue, set on the eve of Gertrude Stein's eviction from the famous studio at 27 rue de Fleures, where Stein and her companion Alice B. Toklas, entertained the major modern artists and writers of the "20s and '30s, the artists she nurtured come alive, often in Stein's own words. Meet Hemingway, Picasso, Matisse, Duncan, and Dali. Leran about Stein's cubist style of writing, which broke boundaries for all writers. making her a pioneering woman in her time! Originally perfromed by Pat Carroll, who commissioned the play, GERTRUDE STEIN GERTRUDE STEIN GERTRUDE STEIN won the 1980 Outer Critics Circle Award as the outstanding production of a play off-Broadway.

"Katherine Burkman disappears into a character whose largeness of spirit and courage come through... in the end this portrait of a woman is as cubist as Stein and Picasso would have liked."

Century Plant blooms at Franklin Park Conservatory

I picked this bit up from the Olde Towne East egroup. Tom House received this and sent it to me.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A once-in-a-lifetime event is about to happen at Franklin Park Conservatory. The Century Plant, also known as Agave americana, is predicted to bloom this month or next in the Desert biome of the Franklin Park Conservatory. The name, Century Plant, derives from the fact that it is known for blooming only once in its lifetime, with a life span of up to 60 years.

When the Century Plant blooms, the giant asparagus-like blooming stalk is so large and grows so fast-up to 8 to 12 inches a week-that it saps all the resources of the plant, which then dies shortly after, leaving a tall wooden seed stalk.

The Century Plant doesn't really take a century to bloom, but it does take approximately 15 years in warm regions and as much as 60 years in colder climates. What exactly triggers the plant to start growing its flower stalk is still a myth to horticulturists.

The last time a Century Plant bloomed at Franklin Park Conservatory was in 1986. The flower stalk grew so tall that Conservatory staff had to remove the glass windows in the Showhouse roof so the Century Plant could continue its upward growth. A flower stalk can measure up to 40 feet high and bears incredibly fragrant large yellow-green flowers, which can be up to four feet wide.

The plant stems from a spreading basal rosette, which can expand up to 12 feet wide. The rosette has large gray-green leaves that can get up to six feet long, each with a spiny margin and a heavy spike at the tip.

The Century Plant is an agave originally from Mexico's arid highlands, but can be cultivated worldwide. It was an important plant to indigenous people, used for medicines, fiber, needles, and food.

Welcome to InnerartBlog

InnerartBlog is a new addition to the innerart.com website. Long-time readers may remember that we used to carry a Guest Book that allowed anyone to make any comments they felt like leaving. Things worked well for a long time, several years, but then the automated spam bots found us and that pretty much ruined the entire guestbook by overloading us with unwanted spam ads.
Now, I am trying this blog to see if it will work better. One thing it does is keep the postings open to "real" people by using a "word recognition" system. I'm told the automated mailers can't read those funny-looking words, but us, ordinary folks can. So, I'm willing to give it a try.
I am a bit of a newbie to the blogosphere but hope you will indulge me during my learning phase, and I will gladly accept hints or other offers of help. Besides, my younger sons insist that I keep up with the 21st century, and we'll see where this experiment goes.
Please don't be shy or hesitant to post your comments or ideas and maybe we can start a lively dialog.
Thanks,
charlie einhorn
