Current Ragazine C.C. features former Columbus photographer D.R.Goff

In the current issue of Ragazine, my old pal photographer D.R. Goff, former Columbus resident, describes how he (sort of) missed Woodstock in:
by D.R. Goff
Incidentally, I also missed Woodstock (sort of) as I was picking apples and pears on a kibbutz at that time. Funny thing I remember most was how, just a few days earlier, all these kibbutzniks stopped me to congratulate me because they knew my nationality and another (much more famous) American had just walked on the moon.
I had my own near-Woodstock experiences while attending the Atlanta Pop Festival in the following year, when I was back in the States. That was the absolute last of those mega festivals. It was bound to collapse of its own weight. Well over one half million people attended. I have some old photos of those days that I am saving for a near feature.-charlie

Yvonne Gunner Photo Exhibit
Last month I was visiting my friends Alan Fliegel and Studio Stu in Kingston, New York. They introduced me to their friend, Yvonne, a photographer who is currently exhibiting black and white portraits at the 2/20 Gallery, in New York City.Alan and his wife Lynn, own and run Babytoes, a business of handmade and hand painted kids and adults garments, in Phoenicia, NY. They also are co-owners of The Arts Upstairs, a gallery featuring many NY artists in their monthly, rotating exhibitions. We have featured Babytoes and the Arts Upstairs in this blog previously.
Studio Stu is a jazz virtuoso on the wash-tub bass, who performs regularly in that area of New York state. Friends of this blog have also read about him before.
If you happen to be in New York City anytime this November, check out Yvonne's Gallery show.

Butterflies photographed by Mark Berger
Photographer Mark Berger, inspired by the yearly butterfly exhibit at the Columbus Conservatory, sent us the following three images. Enjoy!
-charlie
Green Vein CharaxesCharaxes are among the fastest flying butterflies in the world, some reach speeds of nearly 40mph! They are nearly impossible to chase on the wing so catchers wait until they are at rest or sunning. Charaxes are highly desirable and they have extraordinary undersides richly designed and colorful.
Typically dwelling in medium and high altitude tropical African forests, members of the species prefer densely wooded areas and often fly high in the tree canopy. Such traits can make the species extremely difficult to catch unless one knows the secret to attracting the elusive butterflies.

Graphium agamemnon is a predominantly green and black tropical butterfly that belongs to the swallowtail family. The butterfly is also called Green Spotted Triangle, Tailed Green Jay or the Green Triangle. It is a common, non-threatened species native to India, Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia and into Australia.
Once found primarily close to wooded country where there is a fairly heavy rainfall, the Green Triangle is now very common at low elevations and regularly seen in gardens.
Strong and restless fliers, they are very active butterflies and flutter their wings constantly even when at flowers. They are seldom seen drinking from damp patches

CJC World Premiere -Jazz Plays Art

LET'S MIX IT UP!
The Columbus Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Byron Stripling, once again shakes up the modern music scene with Jazz Plays Art, a world premiere multimedia concert event presented in the Swingin’ at the Southern series.
Featuring the art of Columbus native Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson and Kojo Kamau, this event presents a unique view of Columbus's rich cultural history. The works of both Ms. Robinson and Mr. Kamau draw deeply from the collective memories: oral narrations of the Central Ohio community, recollections of a segregated past, their rich familial histories and the echoes of the African Diaspora. Their art is passionate, emotional and inherently committed to Columbus.
The Jazz Arts Group has commissioned famed band leader John Clayton to compose a suite of ‘impressions’ of Ms. Robinson’s works. Aminah Robinson: The Symphonic Poet is a 13-movement epic composed specifically for the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Invoking images and memories of childhood, the chains of slavery and the connections between parent and child, Aminah Robinson: The Symphonic Poet is mesmerizing – a multilayered marathon of creative outputs.
Jazz Plays Art will showcase Central Ohio's own Milt Ruffin Chorale and the stunning gospel vocalist Nia Allen.
The Columbus Museum of Art has collaborated with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra to provide all Jazz Plays Art ticketholders one free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art’s limited engagement of Along Water Street, a new collection of Ms. Robinson’s works. Patrons may present any Jazz Plays Art ticket stub for one admission. In a reciprocal offer, all Columbus Museum of Art members will receive a $10 discount on any Jazz Plays Art ticket with the presentation of a valid membership card. Contact the Columbus Jazz Orchestra box office at 614.294.5200 x3 for further details.
Single tickets for the October 24 - 28 concerts are available for purchase online at jazzartsgroup.org or from the Jazz Arts Group ticket office, (614.294.5200, x 3). Discounted Student Rush tickets (valid college ID required) and Be-Bop Balcony tickets (ages 6-18) are available at the door.
The event will be held Wednesday, October 24 to Sunday, October 28 at the Southern Theatre. Each performance will begin at 8 pm, except for Sunday when the matinee begins at 2 pm and is repeated at 7:30 pm.

Marc Berger Covers Ohio's historic Covered Bridges
Photographer Marc Berger has photographed all the known existing historical covered bridges in Ohio. These wonderful structures once dotted the State's landscape.
Although many have disappeared or are no longer in use, surprisingly, several new covered bridges have been built in some counties. They actually make sense, even today, because the cover offers protection from the elements and adds longevity and the wooden parts are easy and less expensive to repair. Marc has followed their progress, searched for lost bridges in remote locations, and now has the most extensive collection of existing coverd bridges in Ohio.

"Two of perhaps Bowling’s most successful examples of fortuitous celebrity encounters are featured at Q- Bar, both captured in Columbus. One is a profoundly engaging close-up of a 16-year-old Beverly D’Angelo, shot at an after-party on North High St. The other is a head shot of Marcel Marceau, donning a hooded fur coat and obscuring half his face with a promotional image of Bip, his theatrical alter-ego. Additional figurative works are on display, justifying Bowling’s early successes in fashion photography. Showcasing his range of interests, still-life, abstract, architecture and other genre are represented, all in all revealing over thirty years of personal experiences."
