Arnett Remembers the Godfather of Soul
charlie
"My People,
Happy holiday and we celebrate the life of Mister Dynamite, James Brown (JB). As a teen, growing up in music in the early 1960s, he was everything to me.
My Plain City neighborhood kids and I were blessed because we had an uncle, Bill Chapman aka Happy Chappy, who was a radio announcer on WVKO-AM & FM. When James came to Columbus, and he came often, Chappy would be one of the promoters rubbing shoulders with James and after keeping us waiting for ever, Chappy would bring his boys into the dressing room for a peek and handshake with the star.
Without a doubt, my greatest memory of JB was from the summer of 1967 when he performed at the Ohio State Fair Grandstand, doing four shows in two marathon days. My Dad and I watched the first show together and he left me in the grandstand that evening because he trusted me to take care of myself. I witnessed the late show, found my way to my cousin Pinky's apartment and went back the next afternoon for two more shows.
My entry in to professional music was that summer also, with the Vadicans Band of London, Ohio. I played my way on stage at the Arena Lounge on East Main Street to Cold Sweat, JB's hit during that summer.
I greeted James and his wife at Port Columbus Airport in 1983 and in 1986, I was on the way to the Newport Music Hall when I spotted JB's motorcoach in the alley behind the theater. It was the tour season that was promoting Living In America. I walked up the rear steps and asked the first person I saw if Maceo Parker, JB's great alto saxophonist, was on the tour. Within seconds I was pointed up stairs that led into the band's dressing room.
That evening I had a front row seat at the Newport courtesy of the James Brown Band.
JB has become an ancestor and one who has left us tears of joy. He was Black, proud and he said it LOUD. Long live the King.
With love,
A"

PAUL-HENRI BOURGUIGNON: A CENTENNIAL VISIT
January 5 through February 23, 2007
Paul-Henri Bourguignon was an artist, a novelist, a journalist, an art collector and an avid observer of the human condition. Born in Belgium in 1906, Paul Bourguignon traveled widely in the countries of the Mediterranean and lived in both Haiti and Peru. The strong impact of his restless drive to search the world for experiences and human understanding can be found in his work as an artist and in his novel, The Greener Grass. His painting styles during his lifetime included impressionist, modernist and abstract. Viewers have described his work as “timeless, passionate and visionary.” Jacqueline Hall, Art Critic for The Columbus Dispatch, reviewed his paintings in 1989 stating: “When Bourguignon concentrates on faces, the pathos of the human condition stands out.” In 2001 she further wrote: “His paintings keep charming the viewer, even after they have been seen several times.” Gallery V represented Paul Bourguignon’s work for more than ten years. For more information about the artist, visit www.PaulBourguignon.com.
Professor Emerita Erika Bourguignon was a member of the faculty at The Ohio State University for more than forty years. An internationally recognized scholar in the field of anthropology, she is known for her fieldwork with the Chippewa Indians and in Haiti. Prof. Bourguignon served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology at The Ohio State University from 1971 to 1976. Among her publications are Psychological Anthropology: An Introduction to Human Nature, Cross-Cultural Study of Dissociational States (funded by The National Institute of Mental Health 1963-68) and Possession. Professor Bourguignon’s many honors include The Ohio State University Distinguished Research Scholar of 1986 and an honorary doctorate from Queens College, New York in 2000. Erika Bourguignon retired from the university in 1990.
Erika Bourguignon created and sponsored the “The Erika and Paul Bourguignon Lectures in Art and Anthropology” at the university, a series of lectures presenting speakers selected for their knowledge of the relationship between art and anthropology. “Cave Art: Consciousness and the Origins of Art” was the most recent . In the 1950s the Bourguignons also created a series on WOSU radio called “Man and His Music.” The format was developed to examine ancient and primitive music, looking for its influences as Western music developed. In further support of the university, Prof. Bourguignon has made extensive donations to the library of The Ohio State University from the couples’ collection of photographs and books.

Columbus Women's Chorus in concert
Hi Charlie:
The Columbus Women's Chorus concert is coming right up. We'll be singing a mix of folk, classical, and satirical songs, and I have a couple of fun "bits" this time. Afterwards, we'll have a reception and a silent auction featuring goods and services donated by chorus members and other generous individuals. The proceeds will benefit the chorus, helping us to pay for, among other things, sheet music and salaries for our artistic director and accompanist, because ticket sales alone cannot support the work we do.
3:00 PM, Sunday, November 19, 2006 (the day after the Michigan game), at the Unitarian Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Road in Clintonville. There is plenty of free parking.
You can buy your tickets at the door or online:
www.cwchorus.org
Hope to see you there!
Remembering Ed Bradley
charlie
"Peeps,
One of our national heros passed today, broadcaster and jazzman Ed Bradley.
Pat Connors and I were hanging in my favorite New Orleans bar, Donna's, our first night in town for the 2005 Jazz and Heritage Fest. Ed strolled in during the second set with two, young tenderonies.
They sat at the bar and we all caught two sets with the Danza Quartet, Evan Christopher and Tom McDermot. Of course, since Brothers always speak, we exchaged, "Hey, Blood! Whas' Up?"
I've seen Ed in the Chateau LeMoyne, a charming hotel in the French Quarter and I've seen him onstage playing tamborine with Jimmy Buffet.
The New Orlean Jazz Fest is the world's greatest celebration of life. Hundred of thousands of us make it a priority; that is what Ed and I have in common. Work is fame and fortune; jazz is life.
When I play the Saint's tomorrow with my elementary school kids, I will tell them about him and we'll celebrate his life because ED BRADLEY LIVED!
Here are links to the New York Times story and Jazz At Lincoln Center, a weekly NPR series that Bradley hosted.
Bright moments,

"Swing State Ohio the Movie" premiers on Sunday, November 5, at Drexel Gateway
My friend Don Ruben, who volunteered services as an attorney observing the fairness of that election, and was interviewed for the film, sent the following invitation to a premiere of the documentary:
"Charlie- Please go to web site: www.swingstatethemovie.com . this documentatry will be coming to Columbus this Sunday, Nov. 5th at 3:30 at Drexel Gateway. There will be a panel discussion with Herb Asher, one of the filmmakers, and myself as a volunteer lawyer for Election Protection.
I am interviewed some in the movie and there are scenes of short north and the Tavern. A fellow EP lawyer saw the premier in DC and said it is really interesting and insightful . I won't say how he characterized me and leave that up to some non DC folks."

Angsto The Clown says his piece!
"Ever check to see what port scan attempts are being made on your computer? Most folks don't even realize what a firewall does or if its actually operating and just blithely surf and send email. Most port attempts are just internet babble, advertisements being sent out and such. Some however are a bit more sinister. Take a recent scan that came from halhoupro1.halliburton.com, [64.154.26.250:9415] Now what is HALLIBURTON doing scanning my computer? Trying to update me on their stock options, none of which I hold? Dutifully telling me about their proud service to us in Iraq? [see their press statements link below] Or perhaps scanning the public to see who is badmouthing them or who has embarrassing information about Halliburton and subsidiaries on their computers. Its an easy hack to see EVERYTHING on someone's computer once you're past a flimsy firewall. Its just as easy to plant nasty trojan horses and viruses as well. Forgive me for being suspicious about a wonderful corporation like Halliburton, who's CEO made over a half billion dollars in salary last year alone, [one of Cheney's hunting buddies] and who are raking in BILLIONS in corporate profit after being a small, failed company in near bankruptcy before Cheney joined them and the Iraq invasion took place.
Another twisted port probe has been coming in droves to my firewall from the good Bishop and priests at baron.davenportdiocese.org, [63.74.149.12:13226 among other source DNS]. Harmless internet traffic? Until I went to the Diocese website and looked deeper it would seem so, hmm? There on the home page is the Bishop announcing his resignation above links that eventually take you to the Diocese declaring bankruptcy and their new sexual activity policies concerning raping children [in softer terms of course]. Yet another branch of my former Church [ a proud non-believer now due in large part to this kind of sinister evil] getting caught raping children and then protecting not the children but the RAPIST PRIESTS. They are no doubt declaring bankruptcy to protect their money and not their flock from the deluge of lawsuits that are sweeping the Church. Capitalize church and it refers to the corporate monster and not the expensive, grand buildings they use for ritual sacrifice to fleece the flock. Blood drinking and cannibalism you know.
Paranoia on my part or just curiosity and a bit of research that opens up all kinds of frightening and sinister doors? We are a doomed species, as I've said before. Forgive me my pessimism."

Aaron Einhorn appears in McBeth produced by Rosebriar Shakespeare Company
What: Shakespeare's MacBeth, performed by Rosebriar Shakespeare Company
When: Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week (October 26-28) at
7:30, Sunday the 29th at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Historic Town Hall in Groveport, Ohio (a suburb on the east
side of Columbus)
Why you care: Well, it's Halloween weekend, in a theoretically cursed
location, covering Shakespeare's creepiest play. So it has that going
for it. It also includes Aaron Einhorn as a member of the cast,
playing the role of MacDuff.
How much is this thing going to cost me anyhow: Some of you are
students. You are in luck. A smaller number of you are seniors, and
are similarly in luck; tickets will only cost you $9. The rest of you
are stuck paying the higher price. But have no fear! That higher price
will still only set you back a whopping $11.
More details can be found at:
http://www.rosebriarshakespeare.com/ and at bladebrothers.com
(Apologies to anyone who gets this more than once. If you do, consider
yourself lucky to know me through more than one social grouping.)

Short North debuts "Hop-Art" at October Gallery Hop
The first installation will be the real-time creation of a 16 foot mural depicting "The Heart of the Short North." The highly visual piece will be created by artists from the Studios On High Gallery: Sandy Reddig, Jeff Shaw and Rhonda Bartoe Tucker. Other gallery members will pitch in throughout the night to assist with the ambitious undertaking. The mural will be a montage of images from the Short North… distinct architecture, arches, events, the hop crowd, the colors, the vibrancy. The 16' x 4' mural will be created with pastels on panels. The project begins at 4:00PM on Saturday, October 7 and is slated to conclude just five hours later at 9:00PM. It will be staged at the Gallery Hop's newly designated "Visitor's Center"... the open air courtyard directly in front of the Victorian Gate Condominiums at 663 N. High Street.
Visitors can meet the artists, watch the process as the mural comes to life, shop, dine and check back on the work's progress. At 10:00pm the intentionally-temporary installation will be "ceremoniously deinstalled!" In the tradition of sand paintings and sky writing, the art will exist for a fleeting moment, a vision to be experienced first hand by those attending the Hop.

In Memoriam - Jamie Lyons - 60s Rocker
Jamie brushed fame with his version of "Little Bit o" Soul" he recorded as lead singer of The Music Explosion in 1967. The song was a hit that rose to number 2 in the charts. It has since then remained forever enshrined in the traditional repertoire of countless "garage bands" that still include the tune as a favorite, even today.
Ro-z Mendelson, who was then a roadie for Hard Sauce, remembers -as quoted in an article in today's Columbus Dispatch- that: "He was one of the greatest singers. He could just belt out a song like nobody else," and ""Onstage, he was powerful and he’d win everybody over".
As large and dounting as his stage persona was, off-stage he was a warm, gentle, down-to-earth, likeable guy who, like most of us, liked to hang out with friends.
Although he never achieved the fame that was surely due to him, he kept on singing occasionally. For the past two years, he was a featured guest star appearing with the Mendelsonics at Comfest 06 and 05. An enthusiastic large crowd of old friends and new fans cheerd him on at the outdoor art festival last June, as he was performing with the band on the Gazebo stage. At one point he was overcome with a sudden episode that left him confused and dazed. Most folks didn't notice anything as they danced and swayed to the music, and he did recover and finish his set, but the event left him shaken. He had had a history of heart trouble and may have suffered an attack that evening. He returned to his home in South Carolina and seemed to be doing well for a few months but he suddenly collapsed last week, working in his garden where his daughter found him.
He was 57 years old. He was a friend and I will miss him.
For more info, read today's article in the Columbus Dispatch that relates his life and quotes friends and contemporaries.

‘UNREAL REALITIES: A Retrospective of W.C. Hemming Paintings from 1984 through 2006’
Acme Art Company is pleased to announce Columbus native, WC Hemming’s exhibition, ‘UNREAL REALITIES’.
The exhibition is a retrospective of his works dating from 1984 to 2006. The work will comprise a timeline of his motifs: landscapes, portraits, memories and moments in time. Hemming has previously had art shows at the BCN Art Gallery in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, Spain (2003), Costa Del Sol, Spain (2002, 2003), and these venues in Columbus: City Hall, Cultural Arts Center, Roy G. Biv and Lanning Gallery. He has also exhibited at Alana’s; Isabella’s Café Italia, numerous exhibits at the Short North Tavern and has done covers for the ‘Short North Gazette’. He has been a member of Acme Art Company since its inception in 1987.
Hemming, famed for his bar art depictions, is known for his paintings at Dick’s Den and other Central Ohio establishments. Educated at the Columbus College of Art and Design and The Ohio State University he has been painting since 1966.
Hemming’s paintings have the feel of outsider art, fully expressionistic, yet primitive - full of life with irony and humor depicted in rich colors. WC Hemming’s style is straightforward with most of the work in acrylic and canvas. His subject matter is influenced by musicians, famous historical / literary figures, topical events and humorous situations. He is a Boston Expressionist of the Jack Levine School and is inspired by Charles Bragg and Thomas Nast.
Hemming has produced hundreds of paintings ranging from moody landscapes to social commentary to unusual portraits and humorous parodies. Of his work, Hemming says, “I like to paint the human condition and my journey through life. I hope it can touch other people to search their memory for similar experiences. I value the human figure and try to add a little psychology in the emotions behind the paintings so that the expressions are an indication of my age and time and experiences.”
The Opening Reception is Friday, September 8th from 6 PM – 9 PM at Acme Art Company, 934 Cleveland Avenue – between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue. The reception is open and free to the public. The artist will be in attendance. The exhibition runs through October 21st. Please call 614.595.0340 for an appointment.

Charles Massey Jr - Exhibit at The Ohio State University Faculty Club
CHARLES MASSEY, Jr.
“MAKING SECRETS VISIBLE - EVERYTHING COUNTS”
August 30 through October 20, 2006
The Ohio State University Faculty Club will present the prints and drawings of The Ohio State University’s Professor of Art, Charles Massey, Jr., in a solo exhibition beginning on August 30 and continuing through October 20, 2006. The exhibition is titled: “Making Secrets Visible – Everything Counts.” The club, at 181 South Oval Drive, will host an Opening Reception in honor of Professor Massey on Friday, September 29th from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Interested persons are asked to call the club at 614-292-2262.
Speaking of his creative process, Professor Massey reveals: “When I was a child, I liked it that Supermen could discover secrets with his x-ray vision. Since then, I have wished for the power of x-ray vision so that I could see beyond the obvious and know more about what is in front of me. I attempt, through my prints and drawings, to make visible the “secrets” I sense in the things I see. I am looking for something of substance, of consequence”
Charles Massey, Jr., has played an active role in the arts both on the campus of The Ohio State University and in the city of Columbus.
The Ohio State University Faculty Club is located at 181 South Oval Drive on the Columbus campus of the University. The art exhibition program at the club features the selected artwork of the faculty, staff and alumni of the university. Exhibitions are held throughout the year. For more information, please call the club at 614-292-2262. ALL EXHIBITIONS AT THE CLUB ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Rife Gallery shows Growing Season - The life of a Migrant Community
The Life of a Migrant Community
September 19 – October 25, 2006
Photographs by Gary Harwood with text by David Hassler
Presented in the Riffe Center lobby, Growing Season includes original photographs accompanied by text panels that give viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives of a tight-knit community and provide a new understanding of the migrant experience.
Gary Harwood and David Hassler combine photography and words to create a stunning portrait of a community rich in social capital and give voice in a new way to a group of people that are largely unseen and misunderstood.
“When I first received permission, in 2001, to photograph the migrant workers on a family farm in Hartville, Ohio, I anticipated that I would be documenting hardship,” said Harwood. “Migrant workers continually face difficult conditions while trying to support themselves and their families. Farm work is physical, hot and dirty. The days in the fields are long and exhausting, and there is no shortage of documented cases of terrible living and working conditions—what I found; however, was a very different story.”
Harwood photographed the Mexican American and Mexican migrant families over the course of several growing seasons. Though his work began with field photos, over time he focused more on family pictures, as he was invited to photograph baptisms, first communions, weddings, birthday parties, and private family events.
In 2004 writer David Hassler began collaborating with Harwood on this documentary project, which has become both an exhibition and a book.
This project was funded by an Ohio Arts Council 2006 Artists and Communities grant.
Gary Harwood is a 2006 OAC Individual Excellence Award recipient, and David Hassler is a 2000 OAC Individual Artist Fellowship Award recipient.
For more information on the book (available in September 2006), visit http://upress.kent.edu/.
The Riffe Center lobby is open Monday – Friday 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. and during regular gallery hours during the weekend. The lobby and gallery are closed on state holidays.

Upper Arlington Arts Festival is 40 years old - Labor Day Monday, September 4
Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221
614-583-5311
ecable@uaoh.net
(Upper Arlington, OH) - The Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival celebrates 40 years as central Ohio's premier one-day blind-juried arts festival with festival founder Don Dodrill, on Labor Day Monday September 4, 2006. This free festival, hosted by the City of Upper Arlington's Cultural Arts Division, is held in Northam Park and runs from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Made possible through the efforts of City staff and more than 200 volunteers, the festival draws over 25,000 people every year from all over to celebrate and take part in the visual and performing arts. We invite you to enjoy 200 juried, fine art and fine craft artists from all over the nation and Canada exhibiting, selling and demonstrating their wares. Showcasing the works of 20 different mediums including painting, pottery, photography, jewelry, glassware, sculpture and more, the festival offers something for every art collector.
Over the course of 40 years the festival has grown from a small exhibition of local artists in Miller Park to attract artists from all over the country, with the addition of hands-on art activities for children and adults, performing arts, and tasty treats for all to enjoy. In 1966 artist Don Dodrill began the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival with other local artists. Don Dodrill has exhibited in the Upper Arlington Arts Festival every year since its inception, except for one year.
Don Dodrill reflects, "the festival means a lot to me. It has given me an opportunity to meet many artists from different locations, see old friends and neighbors, to sell paintings and accept commissions from visitors. I believe the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival is significantly important in making the arts an important part of community living. Patterned after the Labor Day Arts Festival, other communities have established their own art festivals," remarks Don Dodrill. This year Don Dodrill will exhibit his paintings in booth number 82. Take a moment to stop and let him know how much you enjoy the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival.
Don't miss this memorable day celebrating art, and enjoy your Labor Day with us. To learn more about the Festival visit the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival Web section at www.ua-ohio.net, or call 583-5310.

New Covered Bridge featured in InnerArt
For many years, Marc has photographed and documented over 160 covered bridges in the state and now has the largest, most comprehensive catalog of these unusual, beautiful structures that dotted the American landscape in previuos centuries. These bridges were built to last and many of these wooden structures still function on lots of backroads and carry traffic. Some have also been removed from major roads, but are being preserved on public and private land.
